GDP and the measurement of economic activity

Some caveats:
  • Outsourcing can affect the relative weight of manufactures and services. If a carmaker delivers itself built cars, the value added of this activity is inputed to manufactures. If the firm outsources distribution, the same value added will be imputed to the distribution sector and therefore services. There is evidence that the shrinking of the weight of manufactures in total value added is related to this phenomenon.
